Affogato: The Two-Ingredient Coffee Dessert
What Affogato Is
Affogato (ah-foh-GAH-toh) is Italian for “drowned”. It is a scoop of cold gelato or ice cream “drowned” in a shot of hot espresso, and it is the fastest good dessert you can make: two ingredients, two minutes, no cooking.
In Italy it usually means one scoop of vanilla (fior di latte or crema) gelato and one shot of espresso. The fun is in the contrast: hot and cold, bitter and sweet, a melting puddle of coffee cream at the bottom of the glass.
The Recipe
Makes 1 serving.
| Vanilla gelato or ice cream | 1 large scoop, about ½ cup (70–80 g) |
| Espresso | 1 single or double shot, about 1–2 oz (30–60 ml) |
| Glass | A small glass, cup or bowl, chilled |
Steps
- Chill the glass in the freezer for 10–15 minutes. It keeps the gelato from melting too fast.
- Scoop the gelato into the cold glass and put it back in the freezer while you make the coffee.
- Pull the shot straight into a small pitcher or cup. It should be fresh and very hot.
- Pour it over the gelato at the table, right away, and eat with a spoon.
Tip: Scoop the gelato ahead and keep the glasses in the freezer. When guests are ready, all you have to do is pull the shots and pour.
No Espresso Machine?
You need a small amount of strong, concentrated coffee. Regular drip coffee is too weak; it just waters down the ice cream.
| Method | How | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Moka pot | Brew as usual | Closest to espresso; bold and slightly bitter |
| AeroPress | 15 g coffee, fine grind, about 60 g water, press after 1 minute | Strong, clean, a little lighter in body |
| Strong pour-over | 15 g coffee to 100 g water (about 1:7), fine grind | Brighter, fruitier; best with light roasts |
| Cold brew concentrate | Pour it cold or warmed | Smooth and chocolatey, less hot-cold contrast |
| Instant espresso powder | 1 teaspoon in 2 tablespoons hot water | Works in a pinch; flatter flavor |
See the AeroPress guide for technique.
Which Coffee to Use
- Medium or medium-dark espresso roasts are the classic choice. Chocolate, caramel and nutty notes taste like they were made for vanilla ice cream (medium roasts ).
- Dark roasts give a bitter-chocolate, almost mocha result. They stand up well to rich or chocolate ice cream (dark roasts ).
- Light roasts, like a natural Ethiopian , turn affogato into something fruity, almost like berries and cream. Try one once; it is a great way to taste what a light roast can do.
Whatever you choose, use fresh beans. The espresso is half the dessert.
Variations
| Variation | Change | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Boozy | Add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) amaretto, Frangelico, coffee liqueur or dark rum | Adds almond, hazelnut or caramel warmth |
| Chocolate | Chocolate or stracciatella gelato | Turns it into a mocha |
| Nutty | Hazelnut or pistachio gelato | Classic Italian pairing |
| Salted caramel | Salted caramel ice cream, flaky salt on top | Salt softens bitterness |
| Crunch | Crushed amaretti cookies, cocoa nibs or toasted almonds | Adds texture |
| Creamy | A spoonful of lightly whipped cream on top | Richer, more like a sundae |
| Dairy-free | Coconut or oat-based frozen dessert | Coconut and coffee pair well |
| Decaf | Decaf espresso | Dessert after dinner without the late-night buzz |
Tip: Dense, slow-melting gelato works better than airy, soft ice cream, which collapses into soup the moment the hot coffee hits it. If you use ice cream, pick a premium one with less air whipped in.
Serving Ideas
- For a crowd: set out scooped gelato in chilled glasses, a pot of moka coffee and a few toppings, and let everyone pour their own.
- After a big meal: an affogato is small, light and doubles as the after-dinner coffee.
- With leftovers: extra strong coffee from making tiramisu is perfect here.
Wrap-Up
Start with the classic: one scoop of good vanilla gelato, one fresh double shot, a chilled glass. Once you have tasted it, play with the coffee as much as with the toppings. Switching from a dark roast to a light roast changes the dessert as much as switching ice cream flavors.
