Medium Roast Coffee: The Sweet, Balanced Middle
What Medium Roast Is
A medium roast continues past first crack and stops before second crack (how roasting works ). The beans are an even medium brown, still dry on the surface. Names you may see: City+, Full City, “breakfast” or “house” roast. At the darker end, medium-dark beans start to show a few spots of oil.
It is the most popular roast level in the US, and for good reason: it suits the most coffees, brew methods and tastes.
How It Tastes
- Sweetness: caramel, brown sugar, toffee.
- Nuts and chocolate: almond, hazelnut, milk chocolate.
- Balanced acidity: some brightness, but softer than a light roast.
- Medium body: rounder and fuller than light roast.
The origin still shows through, but with more roast sweetness around it.
Best Coffees for Medium Roasting
| Origin | What medium roasting brings out |
|---|---|
| Colombia | Caramel, red apple, milk chocolate |
| Brazil | Peanut, cocoa, low acidity, heavy body |
| Guatemala | Chocolate, toffee, a little spice |
| Costa Rica (honey process) | Brown sugar, stone fruit |
Medium roast is also the classic choice for blends and for a lot of modern espresso.
How to Brew It
Medium roasts are forgiving and work with almost any method.
| Pour-over | French press | Drip machine | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ratio | 15 g : 250 g (1:16) | 30 g : 500 g (1:16.7) | 60 g per 1 L (1:16.7) |

Tip: Medium roast with milk is the classic latte and flat white combination: enough body and chocolate to come through, enough acidity to keep it lively.
Is It for You?
Medium roast is the best place to start if you are new to specialty coffee or not sure what you like. From there, step to a light roast if you want more fruit and brightness, or a dark roast if you want more body and roast flavor.
